MANILA — Atty. Princess Abante, House spokesperson, on Wednesday criticized Sen. Ronald Bato dela Rosa for sharing an AI-generated video, adding she hopes discussions on legislation to address disinformation will continue in the 20th Congress.

Three House committees have held a series of hearings on "fake news" and on regulating social media.

Abante issued the statement after Dela Rosa was criticized for sharing an AI video  portraying young Filipinos speaking against Duterte's impeachment.

The senator, who will sit as a judge in the impeachment trial, has said it does not matter to him that the video was generated by AI since it is the message of the video that is important.

“Bilang mga opisyal ng bayan, may tungkulin tayong lahat na magtaguyod ng katotohanan. Dapat hindi sa atin nanggagaling ‘yung pag-propagate ng mga peke at maling impormasyon, katulad ng mga post sa social media, whether that is intriga, paninira, paratang or AI-generated content,” Abante said.

(As public officials, we have a duty to support the truth. We should not be the first to propagate fake and wrong information, whether these are rumors, false accusations or AI-generated content)

She said that public officials like Dela Rosa can steer public sentiment and should be responsible with how they use their influence.

Abante referenced recommendations by the tricomm on fake news, which include the passage of a law for a 'comprehensive legal framework' to penalize the creation, publication and financing of false or harmful content online.

“Sana maituloy ito sa 20th Congress, para mapag-usapan ano ang legislative measures na dapat mapasa, para magkaroon ng tamang mga alituntun para maiwasan natin or mabawasan ‘yung pagpapalaganap ng fake news,” the House spokesperson also said.

(I hope this will continue in the 20th Congress so we can discuss legislative measures so there will be guidelines to help avoid or curb 'fake news')

"As public officials, be the example, lead the propagation ng tama at accurate na information. The truth shall set us free, not AI, not fake news," she also said.
