MANILA—For millions of Filipino basketball fans, it was a surreal feeling waking up on Monday morning to the news that Kobe Bryant died.

The Los Angeles Lakers guard and future Hall of Famer died with four other people in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, on Sunday morning.

The confirmation came in the wee hours of Monday, when most Filipinos on this side of the world were still asleep.
