Authorities have identified the man who was killed by police in a shootout inside the Archbishop's Palace in Cebu City.

Senior Supt. Royina Garma, director of Cebu City Police Office, identified the fatality as Jeffrey Cañedo of Barangay Labangon, Cebu City.

Cañedo went to the Archbishop's Palace past 10 a.m. Tuesday to speak to Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma.

"Gusto niyang kausapin si Archbishop...may problema sa pamilya," Garma told "Bandila sa DZMM."

Staff members of the archdiocese told Cañedo that Palma was not around and offered the man to speak to other priests instead.

However, Cañedo insisted for the prelate, which prompted the staff to alert police. A gun was also seen tucked in his waistband.

"Naging suspicious...hindi tinanggal ang helmet, may bonnet at may baril," Garma added.

Cops urged Cañedo to surrender, but the latter refused, leading to a shootout.

In the wake of the incident, Garma said they will intensify security measures around the area.

Police officers in civilian clothes and a patrol team will be deployed, she said.
